Intolerance & Discrimination Against the Scientology Community in Germany Today


  • 1995: A Lutheran kindergarten nursery and day care center in Bockum wrote to Scientologist Mrs. E. that the presbytery had decided in its convention of 15th of March not to accept children of Scientologists.

  • 1995: A twelve year old school girl was called a “sect pig” by her school mates. Her satchel was hidden and later found urinated on in the bathroom.

  • 1995: Scientologist Mrs. L. satisfactorily took care of foster-child S. for a year. When it was found out that S. lived with Mrs. L., some of her school mates stated that she would now also “belong to the sect-crowd.” When Mrs. L. returned from a trip to Australia she was told by the head of the local youth office that he isn’t allowed to provide any other foster-children to her.

  • January 1995, Karlsruhe: The Upper School Office in Karlsruhe wrote to Mr. S., a teacher, that they had discovered he donated funds for Scientology services. They requested that he withdraw from Scientology.

  • January 1995: The group “Help for Pupils” formally disassociated itself from Scientology, including their partners and employees. All partners, teachers and other employees have to declare that they do not have any connection with Scientology.

  • In January and February 1995, the Nordsee-Zeitung Bremerhaven newspaper promoted an upcoming anti-Scientology event with posters placed in schools. The event was organized by the State Office for Youth and Family in Bremerhaven.

  • 1996: Children of Scientologists throughout the country are confronted with a one-sided, biased “sect-education” in their schools. Many of those children are intimidated and do not dare state that they or their parents are Scientologists due to the reprisals that will follow.

  • April 1996: The Karl School sponsored a “lecture” in its gymnasium for students, parents and the public to denounce Scientology.

  • Summer 1996: The daughter of a Scientologist was stopped by some children accompanied by two young men when cycling home. They called her a “sect chicken.”

  • August 1996, Ratingen: The CDU and the CDU Young Union in the City Council of Ratingen applied for financial support for a program of hate propaganda against Scientology. The City agreed to provide money.

  • October 1996, Denmark: The German School and Language-Association for Nordschleswig in Apenrade (Denmark) unanimously decided to refuse children of Scientologists at their schools.

    The Association backed down only after it was informed by the Danish authorities that if it implemented such unconstitutional measures its funding would be cut.

  • November 1996: P., a schoolboy, was insulted by his school mates who called him a “sect pig” after his teacher briefed his class that P.’s mother was a member of the Church of Scientology.

  • December 1996, Munich: An “Action Day — Scientology” was held in the Werner von Siemens School in Munich. The Ministry of Culture wrote a letter expressing its support of this event. The 12-year-old pupils wanted to invite a Scientology representative to make a presentation, but this was refused by the school. The school also refused requests from Church of Scientology representatives to speak.

  • January 1997: The nine-year-old daughter of a Scientologist came home from school crying and told her mother that her best friend is not allowed to play with her any more. Her best friend’s mother prohibited her from playing with the daughter of a Scientologist. Later on, this mother even raised her voice at a public event and reported proudly about the “measure I have taken.”

  • January 1997: Scientologist J. W. reported that his daughter was insulted and called a “sect swine” by children with whom she used to play before.

  • January 1997, Frankfurt: A Scientologist and her eight-year-old daughter distributed Say No to Drug fliers in the city of Frankfurt. The daughter gave a flier to a man who had his young son with him. When the man realized that the flier was associated with the Church of Scientology, he insulted the Scientologist and her daughter as “sect pigs.”
