Religious Apartheid: 1996 – Official Repression of Minority Religious Rights in Germany
Continued
In July of 1994, Senator Dianne Feinstein of California wrote to the President of the Federal Republic of Germany to bring the systemic violations of Scientologists’ rights in Germany to his attention and to request that this situation be investigated and corrected.141 In August of 1994, Congressman Xavier Becerra wrote to then Ambassador Holbrooke regarding discrimination directed at Chick Corea by the German government, noting that his case “is not an isolated incident” as evidenced by letters raising serious questions about the treatment of Scientologists by the German government sent by the United States Helsinki Commission, the Congressional Black Caucus, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, the Congressional Arts Caucus, and numerous members of Congress.142
In October of 1994, the Chairpersons of the Congressional Arts Caucus, the Congressional Black Caucus, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, and the Congressional Human Rights Caucus, wrote to the American Delegation to the Helsinki Conference regarding continued state government sponsored discrimination directed at Chick Corea in 1994.143
Human Rights Organizations have also expressed their concern about discrimination directed against Scientologists to the German government. In July of 1994, Human Rights Office/Helsinki expressed its concern to the Federal Minister of Justice that “members of the Church of Scientology are being discriminated against solely because of their religious beliefs.” Human Rights Office/Helsinki urged the Federal Minister of Justice “to take all necessary measures to ensure that acts of harassment and violence against members of the Church of Scientology are investigated and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”144
The German government continues to ignore these human rights violations, continues to refuse to admit that they even exist, and continues to refuse to enter into a dialogue with Church officials to seek resolution of this problem.
The United States government has detailed human rights violations against Scientologists in Germany over the last few years in the United States government’s official reports published annually by the United States Department of State.
