Religious Apartheid 1997 – Continuing Official Repression of Minority Religious Rights in Germany

Introduction
[Pull Quote] T
he deep concern of the international community for the promotion and protection of freedom of religion, conscience, or belief is clearly expressed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which protects fundamental rights and freedoms “for all without distinction as to race, sex, language, or religion.”

Not only did the world embrace the cherished principles articulated in the Universal Declaration after the horrors of the Holocaust, but the Universal Declaration has served as a seed from which an entire system of protection has grown. Today, the system has innumerable branches all springing from a common purpose: the international promotion and protection of human rights to which all persons, including religious minorities, have a moral claim.

This fragile system which has been established by the United Nations to protect cherished human rights from abuse is under assault in the Federal Republic of Germany.

Although many instances of discrimination occur in secret and go unreported, the number of reported cases targeting and damaging Scientologists has soared over the last year, providing a disturbing indication of the depth of human rights violations against members of targeted minority religions in German society. Hostility towards minority religious members has exploded in a public way in Germany.
