Church of Scientology Reply to the German Government’s Defense of its Discrimination
European Commission on Human Rights
Scientology has also been found to be a religion for the purposes of Article 9 of the European Convention on Human Rights. The Commission stated so in two cases brought years ago against Sweden when it found that the Church of Scientology had standing under the religious freedom clause to raise Article 9 on behalf of itself and its members. A recent decision by the European Commission regarding an application filed by the Church against Germany also found that the Church had standing. Also, the U.N. Human Rights Committee found that Article 18 applied to Scientology when it reviewed Germany’s compliance with ICCPR in November of 1996.
Moreover, dozens of the foremost religious scholars from around the world have each separately and independently examined Scientology and come to the same conclusion that it is beyond doubt a religion.
The stark truth is that the German government has continued to implement discriminatory actions and statements against Scientologists despite the fact they have adduced not one iota of evidence to support their ludicrous charges.
