Germany’s Office for the Protection of the Constitution as an Instrument for Character Assassination

The case against surveillance of Scientologists rests on the firm foundation that it benefits neither the preservation of the state nor the protection of the constitution. Quite the reverse:

1. It has been harmful to many Scientologists by resulting in discrimination against them, such as loss or denial of employment and social ostracism of them and their children.

2. It has created a climate of intolerance and suspicion that has given rise to witchhunts, of which the most publicized – though by no means the only example – is the case of Otto Dreksler.
